When you’re debriefing your setup with your foiling friends, a lot of attention will naturally go towards wings and masts. They’re the centrepieces of foiling, and often what you spend the most time and effort investing in. However, they’re only ever as good as what supports them, meaning that a fuselage plays a key role in your setup too. In fact, the right foil fuselage can make the difference between a stable, forgiving ride and a twitchy, high-performance setup. Let’s take a look at how to choose the right one for you.
Foil Fuselage Length
One of the most important factors when choosing a foil fuselage is its length. A longer fuselage places more distance between the front wing and the stabiliser, creating greater leverage and stability and resulting in a smoother, more predictable ride - which is easier to control, particularly during takeoff and at lower speeds. In general, a long foil fuselage is ideal for beginners and riders who prioritise their comfort and control over fine-tuned performance. The trade-off is that they tend to feel less lively, with slower turning and reduced responsiveness once your skills advance.
As you might expect, a shorter foil fuselage has the opposite effect, being far more reactive and oriented towards more intense, performance-based wing foiling. You can achieve tighter turns and extra responsiveness with a short fuselage, at the expense of ease of use. For that reason, we recommend having a good amount of experience before taking on a short fuselage.
Matching Your Foil Fuselage To Your Wing Foiling Style
Your riding style will have a strong influence on your choice. Riders focused on freeride and cruising generally benefit from the added stability of a longer fuselage, while wave riders often prefer a shorter foil fuselage length for their ability to carve tighter arcs and stay responsive in critical sections of the wave. Freestyle riders also tend to gravitate toward shorter fuselages, as the reduced swing weight and quicker response make aerial manoeuvres and rotations easier to control.
Foil Fuselages From Starboard Foils
If you’re ready to pick up a new foil fuselage for your wing foil setup, Starboard Foils has three solid UCS options, tuned to slightly different uses and riders. All are compatible with the Universal Connect System (UCS), letting you mix and match wings, stabilisers, and masts easily.

66cm Carbon Fuselage
For riders who want quick acceleration and a light overall setup, the 66 cm option in carbon is a great choice. It’s about 200g lighter than the aluminium version, making it ideal if you’re chasing performance in freeride, freerace, or even freestyle wing foiling.
99cm Aluminium Fuselage
The 99 cm foil fuselage sits in the middle of our lineup, offering a blend of stability and manoeuvrability that works well for riders progressing beyond beginner stages or those who enjoy mixed sessions - flat water, waves, and downwind foiling alike. Its reversible design lets you orient the longer side forward for a bit more power or flip it for a slightly looser feel.
109 cm Aluminium Fuselage
If stability and smooth, predictable flight are your top priorities, especially for freeride, cruising long distances, or pumping sessions, the 109 cm fuselage delivers. The longer span gives more pitch stability and balanced control at speed than the other options.
